In My Kitchen October 2012

?>
Welcome to another little tour of my kitchen.  Thank you once again to Celia at Fig Jam and Lime Cordial for hosting this kitchen tour.

Home made muesli makes a regular appearance in my kitchen.  I like to use organic rolled oats gently roasted in locally sourced honey.  To the oats I add almonds, good quality dried fruit, mixed seeds and some shredded coconut.  Served with natural yoghurt this is my favourite breakfast.

Recently I have found myself making more slices than usual.  Depending on the recipe they can be quicker to bake than cakes, I find them easier to cut and they travel and freeze well.  This Banana Slice from the CWA Classics cookbook was particularly moist and delicious.  If anyone is interested in the recipe please let me know and I will post it.

I almost squealed with delight when I recently spotted these Queen B candles at my friend’s shop Thom, Dick and Harry’s.  Terese is always bringing beautiful things into our country town that we would otherwise have to buy online or wait until we travel to the city.

A plate of homemade hummus made for my daughters recent birthday afternoon tea.  I harvested my first piece of garlic especially for this occasion.  The cloves are not yet fully formed but they still gave the hummus that essential garlic kick.

A bunch of sweet peas from my garden.  I am asking myself why I have not grown these before.  They were so easy to grow and the sweetly scented flowers fill my heart with joy!

Sourdough balls waiting to be rolled out into pizza bases for a big family pizza gathering.  More on that later.

My brother grew an enormous pumpkin and my friend Sarah was then inspired to paint it.  How special to be given a piece of art created by a friend.

I know many people in the blogging world are reading this book by Rohan Anderson.  For anyone who is interested in real food, good living and self sufficiency you will love this book.  Whole Larder Love is full of practical advice and beautiful photos.  It is also very funny in parts.

Are you cooking or reading or painting?
What is happening in your kitchen at the moment?

I cannot believe ALL of those pizza doughs you have rolled out – contemplating just one gives me heart palpitations. Is the banana slice recipe "easy" – like could I make it? If so then I'd love a copy of the recipe. Ta!

So many lovely things to Comment on Jane…
I love sweet peas, so pretty and that perfume. Heavenly. I keep forgetting to plant them though. My Dad always planted them on St Pat's day, and it's always my intention to follow suit, I hope I remember next year. I'd like to grow them on our old rainwater tank.
That pumpkin painting is fab btw x

p.s. just got the Kitchenaid back from the 'fixit shop'

Felt like my own kitchen seeing your post. I have been making much the same a little obsession with slices has hit our place, and the muesli and the bread and then you even had the same enamel plates as I do, i loved that.

Another beautiful post Jane. Your enamel plates look good and yes, please post the recipe for banana slice. That's going to be some pizza gathering. Incidentally, your sourdough baking has inspired me to have another stab at sourdough (with a certain amount of success recently).

thank you for the book recommnedation, as you now i love reading about food and eating. i have just reserved this at out library. i can smell those sweet peas from here – they are a favoutite flower of my mother's. and do you use oil on your toasted muesli? i have seen that in recipes and wondered how necessary it was. i shall make my own toasted museli once day!

Hello e, yes I do use a little grapeseed oil in my muesli, I think it helps the honey stick to the oats but certainly could be unnecessary.

Jane, I always so love peeking into your kitchen. It's always such a gentle, peaceful place. Your muesli looks delicious, the flowers and dough and painting are all gorgeous, and the candle is very elegant. Did you know you can make those? Your kids might enjoy the activity – it's very therapeutic. If you're interested, there's a post on it on my blog here:

I think flowers are the best way to cheer up a place or a heart. And your sweet peas are such happy flowers!
The hummus looks really inviting. Am sure it would have vanished fast. Have never had homemade Muesli before. Looks like the perfect way to begin the day.

I'm also a big fan of home made muesli, it beats bought cereal any day. I have a bad habit of eating it at cereal o'clock time- otherwise known as 9pm.
    Lovely kitchen happenings.
