In My Kitchen, September 2013

?>

Welcome once again to my kitchen, I just cannot believe that the season is changing once again and the months are whizzing by.

My friend SummaΒ makes gorgeous macarons. Β In our part of the world macarons are still somewhat of a speciality and certainly not something seen regularly in the local bakeries and cafes.Β  Love your work Summa!

My friend PaulaΒ grew these Ruby grapefruits and tasting them proved to be a turning point for me.Β Β I have always wanted to enjoy grapefruit but just haven’t been able to.Β Β I chopped these up and served them with natural yoghurt and loved them.Β Β The yoghurt just helped to smooth out the sourness.

Β

Home grown thyme in one of my favourite little teapots and rocket and coriander in recycled tomato tins.Β Β This little arrangement just made me smile.

I am always searching for new ideas for morning tea, snacks and lunches for the family.Β Β Recently I borrowed The Thrifty KitchenΒ from the library and I immediately baked the apple muffins and muesli slice.Β Β I highly recommend this book if you are looking for tasty family recipes and ideas.Β Β As well as recipes it is full of tips on saving money, sensible food shopping, packed lunches, meal planning and minimizing food waste.

With an almost endless supply of greens in my garden this greens pie with nut pastryΒ was a great way to use up some green leaves.Β Β Although the crust was very crumbly and a little messy to serve it was tasty.

Much like grapefruit, beetroot and I have only just become friends.Β Β Since I have been growing Golden beetroot I have started to appreciate the colour and taste of this delicious underground vegetable.

We buyΒ RioΒ coffee mainly because these are the beans our local cafeΒ uses so we can buy them locally.Β  The packaging recently changed on these particular beans and I love it. Β I am easily enticed byΒ pretty packaging!

What are you cooking at the moment?

Are you enticed by clever packaging?

Celia is the host of this fun kitchen tour, please visit her kitchenΒ and join in the fun!

Those baked goods just look delicious. I'm trying to eat a few less baked good, something I have never before attempted and is proving near impossible (this time around I have too much baby weight hanging on). I will try to shift my focus to those gorgeous grapefruits πŸ˜‰

it is a well-known fact in my family that i am seduced by beautiful packaging. sometimes i buy something JUST for its packaging, and i can't wait to use it up so i can decant my usual stuff into it.
i do not beleive you would need lessons on minimising food waste, jane! you strike me as a very sensible cook in that area.
love the greens pie πŸ™‚ and my mouth is puckering at the thought of ruby grapefruit. yum!
ps love those golden beetroot too

I'd find it hard to resist buying coffee when the packaging looks so good. The macarons look wonderful – just perfect. The muffins and slice look perfect for a lunch box that's going to rattle around a tractor for a few hours; just the thing I need to pack up while autumn cultivations are in full swing.

I'm always enticed by awesome packaging. I love the canister of my favourite tea, and everyone morning when I dig in to it, I'm sure the packaging adds to the whole experience… or they put some special tea magic in there which make me enjoy it more, I'm not sure.
Macarons look divine, could they possibly look any more perfect?
And the beetroot? Completely understand. We've only become recent friends as well. In my head, I still say ick, so I have to remind myself it's truly ok…even enjoyable some times!

    Yum Yum Jane!
TT offers me ruby grapefruit from their place whenever it's in season and I always decline because like you, I have tried to like it, but never really do. But I'll have to try with yoghurt as you suggest!
Beetroot though – whaaatttt? That is one of God's gifts to vegetable growers πŸ˜‰ I hope you can come to really love it.

It's always so soothing to spend time in your kitchen, Jane! Ruby red grapefruit juice is a favourite here (although I've never tried the actual fruit), and I love beetroot as well, but only the red old-fashioned ones. The macarons look amazing, and you've inspired me to save my tomato tins to plant succulents in, thank you! πŸ™‚

Jane, yes I'm one of those enticed by beautiful packaging — and, by your beautifully packaged In My Kitchen post. What a treat for the eyes! Your thyme in a teapot (and tins in the background) made me smile, too! Never in a million years would I have thought to pair grapefruit with yogurt… thank you for that idea.

You must share your recipe for the greens pie. Sometimes all it takes is a flcik through the blogs to gain inspiration!

ps: I think Annalisa have the best lentils and butter beans. I'm never without tins of all their pulses and legumes.

Yum Jane! We have a very prolific grapefruit tree but I also don't eat them. I must find a new home for some of the fruit. I also am new-ish to beetroot love and am trying to grow them for the first time. Will see how I go…

I grew golden beetroot this year as well though mine didn't get that big…our growing season here is very short.
If you're trying to use up lots of greens, I've done a post on kale pesto (you could use beetroot leaves) and on Khachapuri (bread filled with greens and feta) The khachapuri are very portable and won't crumble like a crust would .
