In My Kitchen, December 2014

?>

Is it a savoury scroll or is it a rolled up pizza?Ā  I am not really sure.Ā  I took a piece of bread dough from my last batch of sourdough, rolled it out roughly into a rectangle and topped it with tomato chutney, chopped ham, grated cheese and fresh thyme.

Then I rolled it up into a sausage, cut it into seven slices and cooked them in a hot oven. ItĀ couldn’tĀ be any easier andĀ reminds me of just how versatile sourdough is, once you have a bread making routine established.

Walls, roof pieces, attic windows and tiny doors, building material of the gingerbread variety.Ā Ā At Christmas time there is just something about gingerbread houses that I love.Ā Ā I find the only way to achieve stress free building success is to make the pieces early and freeze them.Ā Ā Then, closer to Christmas it is easy to construct my houses without the pressure of baking.Ā Ā I favour a fairly simple structure with not too many embellishments.

Zucchini season has started in my garden and I cannot wait to make a batch ofĀ Rohan’s pickles.

My cousin and his gorgeous wife recently had their third baby, a precious little girl.Ā Ā I made Sarah a batch of oatmeal lactation biscuits. Ā Apparently these are great for boosting milk supply.Ā Ā When I was at the breastfeeding stage of life I had not even heard of these.Ā Ā The magic ingredient is brewers yeast, I wonder if anyone else out there has tried them?

Garlic from my garden.Ā Ā This harvest has not been my biggest but I am still thrilled to have home grown garlic after months of having no garlic in the house at all.

I have been baking biscuits like a maniac.Ā Ā Some are for Christmas gifts, some are for everyday snacks, some are for hungry workers to dunk in their tea or coffee and I am also in the middle of a massive batch which is a one off paid biscuit project.Ā Ā I made this batch using my favourite gingerbread recipe finished with a sprinkle of candied fennel seed fromĀ Herbie’s spices. Ā They were crisp, spicy and robust enough to be packed up for farming men on the move.Ā Ā My favourite type of biscuit.

Are you baking, building or breastfeeding?

Wishing you a happy week.

As always I am linking up withĀ Celia from Fig Jam and Lime Cordial.

You have been busy baking Jane! It all looks delicious. Gingerbread houses always make me smile as a Great Aunt gave us one every year for Christmas. It was a lovely tradition that I miss!

What a great idea to freeze your gingerbread house pieces…..I would never have thought to do this. Do you freeze them in an airtight container, how long do you freeze them for and do you just thaw them out in fridge overnight? Thanks.

Thanks Elise, I freeze these pieces in zip lock bags for one or two months. In my part of the world they thaw very quickly at room temperature.

I'm baking and breastfeeding and would love the recipe for those lactation biscuits if you feel like sharing! I have a two month old who happens to be the size of a six month old so I need all the help I can get! I made pizza scrolls last week too, and a batch of cinnamon, sultana, and walnut scrolls because I'm always keen for something sweet šŸ™‚ Will have to get onto our Gingerbread House. The almost-three-year-old will just love 'helping' me, I'm sure!

Ooo I'd love to see your finished gingerbread house! One day I'll have to try making my own šŸ™‚
How our climates must differ although we're in the same country! Our zucchini season is just finishing, our most prolific months being August-September šŸ™‚

I made my first loaf of sourdough the other day – I'm loving the bread baking routine it has enforced – if all the bread is eaten before baking day, too bad šŸ˜€

I always look forwad to your IMK post Jane, not only to view the wonderful things you bake, but to play 'eye spy' some lovely retro treasure. This post turned up quite a few. The Begonia chocloate tin and the lovely green ( green with envy) knife in first pic. I also love that basket with the garlic which reminds me, time to get mine up and dried.

All looks wonderful in your kitchen as usual Jane. Every year I think I'll make a gingerbread house and every year I run out of time. Why didn't I think to freeze the pieces? I'm going to pinch your idea for the savoury scrolls and the perfect looking ginger biscuits to feed everyone out in the Christmas Tree barn – though I fear my biscuits won't look as good as yours šŸ™‚

everything looks gorgeous as usual… I haven't had much success growing garlic… do you have any tips? I have never made a ginger bread house… but I like your idea of making it and freezing it, I think I will try that next year… not time left to do it this year šŸ™‚ Those zucchini's look wonderful and please tell, what are Rohan's Pickles? I look forward to your reply if you have time! Thanks for sharing! Liz xx

Sorry Elizabeth and Fawkes, perhaps I should have explained this further. Rohan Anderson from the blog Whole Larder Love has a book by the same name which includes a Hot Zucchini Relish recipe. It also contains other great recipes and information regarding real food!

brewer's yeast … is that why they used to recommend drinking Guinness?!
right now I am neither baking, building or breastfeeding šŸ™‚ but I would gladly go at those gingerbread biscuits; they look good for tea dunking.
and well done on your garlic harvest, jane!

A treasure trove of ideas and wonderful things! Love that old biscuit tin, the green handled knife and the wire basket your garlic is in. I am madly coveting those courgette flowers – will have to wait until next year to get my hands on some! Have you ever tried the garlic wet – i.e., not dried? I buy it like that quite a lot – the flavour isn't as pungent and the cloves are very juicy. Have a wonderful December!

Beautiful post – I made my first gingerbread house last year but am not sure it will be a yearly project as it was quite stressful (ie I kept expecting it to collapse). Your walls and rooves look so effortless. I'd like to try some sourdough scrolls. Wonder if my pizza dough rolled up might work! Love all your bikkies and baking too. Best wishes for a great festive season
