Country Style, Harvest Table Awards, 2013

?>

I am fairly certain that many of you read Country Style magazine.  If you are flicking through the beautiful pages of the December issue you may see our little gardeners, Annabelle and George.  Annabelle is the proud winner of the Individual Home Harvest Journal as part of the Harvest Table Awards for 2013.

Throughout autumn and winter Annabelle kept a journal of our gardening activities.  Her journal included photos, weather observations, seed packets, dried leaves, recipes and plenty of notes on everything from worms to cooking vegetables from the garden.

This is an exercise that we could have done individually as family but being involved in the Harvest Table Awards gave Annabelle some extra incentive and a feeling of being involved in something rather exciting.

Congratulations to the Wendouree Primary School who were the winners of the Best School Harvest Table award.  Congratulations also to the other finalists, it is so exciting to see children growing food.

If your family has a vegetable garden I would recommend getting involved in this next year,it is a lot of fun.

Happy Friday friends, I hope the school year is winding down for you.  For us, the end is almost in sight!

Way to go Annabelle – your journal sounds totally AMAZING! I'd love to see some photos of it…maybe Jane could take a few photos for her blog (if you don't mind sharing that is). I love the idea of putting seed packets & leaves into the journal…but then I just love journals! The more you can pack into one the better I say. Hope you're garden is going well – I found worms in two of my tomatoes today – so gutted! Mel x

Thanks Mel, I might try to share some photos. Country Style still have Annabelle's journal but it will be sent back to us at some stage. Sorry about your tomatoes, I am having tomato 'issues' too, if that makes you feel any better. Have a great weekend x

Well done kids! And such a beautiful harvest you have there too. I love Country Style and usually read it at the doctor's surgery (I seem to be spending plenty of time there this year!). Happy cooking Jane xo

congratulations to annabelle, and george 🙂 what a wonderful thing to do – at any age. i keep thinking if your children do that over many years, they will have a wonderful record, not just of their activities but also the garden and weather conditions -the changing world.
i usually pick up the magazine from our local library so i shall look out for the december edition! i hope you had a happy weekend too jane.

Thank you e, it would be a great record if we continued it over the years. I keep a simple garden journal myself, noting dates, varieties planted etc. But, it is not at all creative…just basic record keeping. I hope your Christmas countdown is going along happily 🙂

My auntie buys the magazine, I will have to try find this next time we visit their farm. How wonderful, congratulations to Annabelle!! (what a beautiful name). She and George must have indeed had so much fun being a part of this. This table of goodies looks so scrumptious. (I wondered if anyone would notice the candle! Good eye! I decided not to reveal it in the post in case anyone decides to visit for themselves and then they can be surprised. But since you asked…. They brought it out at the beginning without revealing what it was. A little while later they brought out bread they make on site and revealed the candle was made from beef dripping! So as it melted we could scoop it from the bottom…. AMAZING!) x

Thanks Lucent, wow, a beef dripping candle! I was guessing it was keeping some sort of dripping warm but I wouldn't have guessed the whole candle was edible. Very creative. Lovely to hear from you, happy festive season to you x

Congratulations Annabelle for keeping up the journal; after the initial burst of enthusiasm it can be difficult to keep going. Have just downloaded the magazine so I can check it out over the Christmas break.
