Over the years I have gathered quite a collection of old kitchen implements.Β Amazingly, I have not bought much of it.Β Most of it has been scrounged or given to me by thoughtful friends, family and fellow
bloggers.
The dints and worn handles remind me of outback cooks, shearerβs kitchens and solid lunches eaten in the paddock.
These old knives could tell a story or two about white bread, hearty meals and real butter.Β I am not actually sure of the correct name for the middle implements but I find them very useful for lifting warm biscuits onto cooling racks.
At some point I decided I quite fancied old thermoses.Β Β I bought one at a second hand shop and shortly afterwards a whole box of old thermoses found me.Β Β Life is funny like that.Β Β The little glass Cottees bottle has sentimental value, apparently it always travelled with at least one of these thermoses whenever milk was required.
I know some of you will have memories of these brightly coloured metal cups that stack neatly into soft leather pouches.Β Β These two sets have never been used and are just waiting for a picnic or road trip.
One day I hope to get invited to a vintage themed picnic.Β Β When I do, I will be ready with at least four Willow brand picnic tins all in varying condition.Β Β Β This old cane basket has three compartments within it, making it perfect for carrying thermoses or bottles.
I am not really into mashed potato but these old mashers are lovely.Β Β The graters are buckled and bent, just right for grating wayward fingers.Β Β They will live out their retirement happily in the props cupboard far from active duty in the kitchen.
I could go on.Β Β I havenβt even started on the sifters, aluminum colanders and teapots, rolling pins or enamel ware.Β Β Β Another day perhaps?
Are you collecting or baking or creating?Β Β I hope so.
This post was partly inspired by Francesca from Almost ItalianΒ and her charming collection of green thermoses.
As always I am linking up withΒ Celia from Fig Jam and Lime Cordial.

I have a fondness for old kitchen implements too. I love that the wooden handles feel soft from years of hands using them. The two in the center in your top picture are spatulas for spreading icing. They do a great job of it, too!
Jane S
Thanks for calling in Lana, you are so right about the soft wooden handles π

what lovely photos jane of all your treasures..there's something about old and worn utensils and equipment that touches my heart..new things just don't have the same effect on me..x
Jane S
Thanks Jane…I know you have a love for certain well worn bits and pieces too x
CountryMouse
Love your collection. I don't have the space to collect anything but I would love to get my hands on those knives, they are certainly good quality. Love that you keep the rusty graters for props. Old thermoses are the best at keeping things hot, they don't make them like that anymore. Maybe with all that picnic gear you need to be the one to put one on.
Jane S
Thank you! Perhaps I do need to have a big picnic!
Anne
There's something very comforting about using utensils that are worn by years of use. I would describe the middle knives as palette knives (though that's not to say that's the correct term). The knives to the right look just like the knives we use every day that were my grandmother's. Hope you get invited to a vintage picnic though I agree with CountryMouse that you may need to be the one to arrange it.
Jane S
Palette knives sound good to me Anne! Quality knives stand the test of time don't they, I am sure your grandmother's are treasured items x
Lizzy (Good Things)
I love your palette knives, Jane.. the one in the middle left is similar to a red handled one that I kept from my brother's kitchen when he died. You have a great collection of old wares… the picnic hampers are fabulous too! I like to collect things to, and am adding to my kitchen here and there from a thrift store five minutes from my home… I don't buy things as props so much, more to use… and, to be honest, at (almost) 56 I have a lifetime of 'things', including treasures from my mother's kitchen too. Happy cooking my friend. xo
Jane S
Oh I completely understand about 'things' Lizzy. Although I haven't been collecting for quite as long as you, I have inherited a lot of things from my grandparents and also my husband's older relatives. Sometimes it is just too much stuff…but it does have sentimental value and one day I hope our children treasure it or at least preserve some of it.
Your brother's palette knife sounds like a family treasure x
Kate
What a great post Miss Jane!!
I wonder, do you store all your treasures in cupboards and drawers or do you have them on display somehow?
Jane S
Hello Kate, most of it is packed away for fear of my home resembling a second hand shop! x

Lovely to see some of your collection. Many of the things in your photos are so familiar to me. We used knives just like the ones on the right every day. My parents had a set of those metal cups in the leather pouch. They remind me of Christmas holidays of my childhood when we would use them on camping trips! I also love to use old kitchen implements. I have an old wooden handled egg beater which still works a treat and a chopping board that is worn down in the middle. It was a wedding present for my Mum and Dad in 1947. I love using it as it reminds me of my Mum. Having these old treasures in your kitchen just makes it more special!
Jane S
Hello! I do love old chopping boards and your board sounds lovely. What a beautiful memory to have π

I can't believe it- another thermos fancier, and fine ones they are too. I also collect some of those other kitchenalia items- why stop at the thermos. Love the knives, the tins, the vintage cups. My daughter has an unspecified amount of those retro drinking cups as well as anodised soda syphons, anodised ice buckets and so on. You and Rachael should get together for your picnic.
Jane S
I am sure your daughter is a women of fine taste when it comes to kitchenalia Francesca! Thanks for calling in π

Love all your well loved kitchen goodies Jane. It's the old stuff that have the stories attached to them, the individual characters the…well small pieces of fingers if it's those graters. My collection isn't as big as yours but I do love them all…especially the butter knives. I LOVE them.
Jane S
Thanks Brydie, there is just something about those old knives isn't there?
e / dig in hobart
your kitchenalia collections are so charming. i think they are too nice to have packed away, as you said in one of your replies. maybe you can have a selection out that you change regularly.
Jane S
Thanks e, you will be pleased to know that I certainly do display some bits and pieces, especially new discoveries!

ooh yes i love old gadgets. the palette knives are so useful. and i have a bit of a thing about thermoses too. i have several steel ones. and anodised cups are so darn cute. remind me of my childhood.
Jane S
Thanks Sherry, I think a lot of people have childhood memories of those anodised cups π

I also have a collection of old kitchenware and utensils- I do tend to use them, however, because they take up space and need to justify their placement. My mother used to say that my house looked like an antique shop with a Christmas wing on the side. LOL- I don't care- it is MY kitchen and I have a connection to the story behind the pieces.
Thanks so much for sharing- I enjoyed seeing your stash!
Jane S
I am sure your kitchen is full of interesting things that could tell many stories! Thank you for calling in as always!

G'day What a great post and anything retro always makes me smile and brightens my day too!
Thx for this month's kitchen view also!
Cheers! Joanne
Jane S
Thanks Joanne, retro makes me smile too π

The aspiring minimalist in me struggled when we stumbled across some stunning copper kitchen pieces in an antique market in italy! Luggage realities won otherwise I might have strayed! π

Sometimes I wish I was better at minimalism Lucent π

But I'm still thinking about the copper pieces. Perhaps I made a mistake in leaving them!?!? π
Have a lovely rest of your week dear Jane xx

These are beautiful. I'm so happy to see another collector. I have items passed down by my mum from my great grandmother (Born 1900) – Mum still uses Nan's carving set for every roast, and I have her potato masher (same wavy design),cheese grater and depression glass orange juicer and butter dish. I really enjoy using them.
We still have the aluminium picnic cups from my childhood too, can't wait for our kids to use them.
Do you own butter paddles?
P.S. The middle item is an offset icing spatula. The bent blade is made to keep your hand above the icing π
Thanks for sharing your lovely treasures.
Jane S
Thanks so much Lucy, lovely to hear from you. No, I don't have butter paddles but if I found some for the right price I would be tempted! Your collection sounds lovely π
The Desert Echo
Oh the thermos have aged so beautifully. It makes me nostalgic for a time I wasn't born in but obviously have romanticised.
Jane S
Thanks Jo, great to hear from you π
celia
Jane, I was reading through your post and I got to the thermoses and I thought, "ooh Francesca will be excited to see these!" π I love that the IMK posts connects us all in such a lovely way! I love your old tools in the first photo, and I'm sure my mum had those little metal cups when I was growing up! Lovely slice of outback history in your post this month! π
Jane S
Thanks Celia, these posts certainly do create a lovely connection! It really is amazing x

Guilty, I collect bake wear especially enamel…! I am most envious of those knives, they are wonderful! The middle ones are called spatulas π don't wait to get invited to a picnic, host your own picnic party… I went to one yesterday and it was fantastic!!! thanks for sharing, Liz xx
Sandy
Such a great collection of vintage kitchen gadgets! They are always so fascinating to look at in second hand stores! Thanks for sharing them π
Isis
great collection! i can say i'm doing all the of the above collecting, baking and creating – always!
Lilbitbrit
I think they are called a spatula. I love vintage kitchen ware too and even my wedding presents of over 30 years ago are looking somewhat vintage now in creams and browns of the early eighties era.
