There is something special about the clip clop of horse’s hoofs approaching and the gentle jangle of their harness. Last week we cooked dinner for some riders who are on a 1600 kilometre (1000 mile) horseback adventure as part of the Thousandmiler trail ride.
On the day this intrepid crew rode into our property they had been in the saddle for around 50 kilometres through rain and freezing cold wind. Despite this they were in good spirits and happy to see a blazing camp fire and hot showers.
Under difficult weather conditions Terry skilfully cooked home raised roast lamb and crispy potatoes in our camp ovens. I could have happily spent the entire afternoon taking photos of the magnificent horses but catering duties called.
To our new friends, good luck for the remaining ride! It is an inspiring journey you are undertaking.

Hi Jane – what a lovely post, such great photos. What intrepid riders, sounds like a great adventure. I did a five day ride once and it was great, if tiring! Looks like you cooked up a real treat for them – well done. I'm sure it was much appreciate. cheers Wendy

What beautiful horses! I love the sound of horses coming…at out local markets there is sometimes a carriage there….the sound of them coming down the street is just lovely! Much nicer than the sounds and smells of cars & trucks.
Take care,

Yum, yum, and yum!
Now that's what you call food Jane. I can only imagine how good that lamb tasted. Especially to those tired and hungry Thousandmilers. I'm not a big meat eater, but I do love my lamb.
These pics (your whole blog actually) reminds me of another time in my life, it makes me appreciate how lucky I was to have experiences like these, so different from my life now. Thanks Jane x

Their bums must be SO sore! I'm allergic to horses sadly as I think they are such beautiful animals. Love the photo of the two guys standing looking into the fire. That lamb & potato dinner looks AMAZING! Can I visit just for that please.

Jane-would they have been through Pooncarie 2 weekends ago by any chance? I was on my way home from the wedding on Saturday (6th) and out our road past Birdwood there were horses etc all pulled up under a tree having lunch, the weather was vile so we didnt stop but Im thinking this may have been them! Camp oven food looks amazing-well done! We had one a couple of weeks ago when we had visitors from Geelong up (Adele that Ben went to Monivae with!)

My goodness what an amazing ride they're doing – I just looked on their website. How lucky they are to stay at places like yours with all that delicious food and hot showers. Were you tempted to saddle up and join them for a day or two?

Jane those horses are so beautiful! I dreamed of wild horses the other night, I'm sure that's symbolic of something… The lamb and potatoes look pretty special too. Looks like you had an amazing time!
