Friends and sharing

I am lucky enough to have a lovely friend who is married to a cousin of mine, so she is also family.
We share a love for cooking, vegetable gardening, books, markets, country living (but also a little city living when the time is right) and pursuing balance and happiness for ourselves and our families.  Due to school routines and outback distances we only see each other occasionally.
Instead of a shared weekly coffee or lunch we have started a package swap which happens every fortnight or so.  At a mutually agreed location we drop a package for each other to collect.  Over the last year we have swapped seeds, plants, relish, cuttings, homemade artwork, a pumpkin, tea, hand-me-down children’s clothing and always books or magazines.
Sometimes we might write a handwritten note which is normally just a hello, a brief description of the goods or a little shared news.   I don’t think either of us have bought anything specifically for our swap.  It is always handmade, home grown, something from our pantries or books and magazines that were bought to share eventually anyway.
I have grown to love this swap.  It is about generosity, sharing and building friend ship.   Every package is a little surprise and it always brightens my day.
Do you swap bits and pieces with friends?
Do you make friends easily?
For me it takes time.
Happy Friday blog friends.

sharing like you do with your friend is such a great idea and a lovely way to stay connected with her..

i have one friend with whom i share like that but it's when we visit each other..sometimes it's just a little bunch of flowers or vegetables from the garden..and we often check before visiting to find out if surplus one of us has is useful to the other..

this is a lovely thing to do!
making friends is harder when you're an adult, i think. my closest friends are now 'remote', either in another state or far enough away that it takes planning to catch up in person. but there is much emailing that goes on, and i think they read my blog and stay in touch that way.
i like the new friends i am making thru my blog, talking with people who live far away from me – including broken hill 🙂 – but share my interest in good food and a good life.
happy friday to you too jane.

Thank you e, I think this is what we all love about blogging…we have a common interest immediately and from there the friendship grows 🙂

I suck at making friends…so I have about five of them in total. I love the idea of swapping things for your friend – but especially the "drop off location"…is it a cafe or store in town?

Mel, I honestly think if you have 5 real friends you are doing very well. The drop off location is actually my aunties house which we are both lucky enough to have access to when we need it. Very handy with young children 🙂

Your friend is also passing this on to her children by getting them to share a piece of fruit with me from their trees or a few flowers…heads mostly…or a snatch of basil or mint in the passing! All good training for life. (I have been assured that I can have all the ripening figs while they are away!)

Love this idea, Jane, thank you for sharing it. I found it hard when I was younger, as I was so quiet and shy. I think I'm still something of an introvert, but always know in my heart when I meet someone whether I am going to form a friendship and, more importantly, stay friends.

What a great idea and a wonderful way to brighten up a day – it is so nice to get surprises. I have a dear friend who lives in London & another in LA – maybe we should start up a long-distance version of this? Of course, we'll have to keep the parcels light.

This is a lovely idea Jane. I often think that blogging is like a virtual drop off but wouldn't it be wonderful if we could just slot a loaf of bread into the computer and hey presto it's transported to a blogging friend?
