Hello friends, welcome to my kitchen once again. Can it really be autumn?
There are still some tunes pumping out of my kitchen when the time is right. Lately there has been a little Roland Tings, 1200 Techniques and once again, Eric Church. Eric’s music always makes me feel a little sentimental, but a kitchen can’t function on music and sentimental thoughts alone!
One tiny pear held by an eight year old hand that is quickly growing. This year we picked three pears from our young tree, I look forward to more next year.
My final harvest of tomatoes. When I picked this lot I hoped they would ripen and some of them did. Some of them just turned brown and attracted bugs.
This lot went into the wood oven overnight after we had cooked a lamb roast. They dried beautifully and I have frozen them for future use, probably on pizza.
Rolled oats are one of my favourite ingredients. Some go into muesli to get my day off to a tasty and satisfying start. Some go into biscuits for morning tea and school day snacks. I also used home-grown/home dried apricots in both the muesli and the biscuits. I think I have said it before but dried fruit and rolled oats cancel out all other less ingredients, surely.
Old stuff tends to just find me. This little collection was amongst a whole box of other treasure I recently acquired. I think each piece could tell a few stories about outback storerooms and no nonsense food. The Bunnykins baby bowl is very heavy and extremely well worn.
What is happening in your kitchen this month?
Are you collecting or baking or listening to tunes?
Once again I am linking up with my friend Celia from Fig Jame and Lime Cordial.

We have a huge glut of tomatoes and I have been roasting and chutneying for days. The plums, nectarines and pears have finished ans now waiting for the apples, although with 5,000 apple tree orchard over our back fence it would be easy to get a few freebies 😉
Jane S
Wow Meg…that is a lot of apple trees! Happy chutneying to you!

Hi Jane..need to know more about freezing the dried tomatoes….do they come out OK? love your blog
Jane S
Thank you so much Suzie, we haven't actually taken any of these tomatoes out of the freezer yet, but I need to test them. Thanks for the reminder.
Anne
All looking wonderful Jane. Your tomatoes look delicious.I'm using the last of my frozen tomatoes and shall miss them when they're finished. Still only a few months until the next harvest. We've got one of those heavy bunnykins bowls – it weight and size makes an excellent water bowl for chicks and ducklings.
Enjoy your autumn days in the kitchen.
Jane S
Lucky chicks and ducklings drinking from an old Bunnykins bowl, what a lovely picture that paints in my mind!

You know Jane what I love most in this post? Those fabulous old tea tins . Just so evocative of years gone by.
Jane S
Thanks Francesca, I can rely on you to comment on my old stuff!
Lizzy (Good Things)
Oh Jane, I love that you are celebrating that tiny harvest of pears! So lovely. And that old stuff… reminds me of my childhood. Happy weekend. ox
Jane S
Thank you Lizzy.

Hi Jane, Great idea to roast your tomatoes. Tania from The Cook's Pyjamas suggested drying them and then making powder much like a dried tomato paste. I am going to try that too. Love your purchases. Pity the dish has a chip out of it. Chips worry me 🙂
Jane S
Chips worry me too Glenda, this bowl is well beyond using. Great idea on the tomatoes, thanks for that!
Kavey
Lovely tomato harvest. I love using green tomatoes in a chutney, their sharpness is works well in chutney and can balance with raisins, plus the usual sugar vinegar combo. Those tins are so pretty.
Kavey (first time joining IMK!)

Thanks Kavey, welcome to IMK!

I have the same Bunnykins bowl, it is heavy isn't it! I'm very envious of all your gorgeous home grown produce. Have you tried overnight oats yet?
Jane S
Thanks Vicki, I haven't tried overnight oats!

Beautiful post again! That muesli looks sensational, apricot envy here. I remember going to the grocers with mum and they would sell biscuits out of these tins. sold in brown paper bags and then into the bickie tin at home. The crumbs in the bottom of the tins (I'm led to believe) is how hedgehog slice came about.
Jane S
Thank you so much, that is a lovely story from your childhood. Yum, good old hedgehog slice!

Trying not to collect. Forever baking. And always listening to music…although not always what I would like. I frequently seem to be over ridden in my music choices by small people!
Jane S
My music choices regularly get interfered with too Brydie. I should be following your lead and not collecting!

i'm enjoying silence at home lately – our work building is being renovated and everyone is squished up and it is so loud, i love to come home to peace!
am roasting tomatoes again today – it is my weekend job. probably a lot of people's weekend job right now!
Jane S
I enjoy some silence at times too e. It is funny (for me) my different moods, the time of day and what jobs I am doing all dictate my need for peace and quiet or something a little bit more motivating 🙂

How lovely it will be to pull those tomatoes out of the freezer in the coming months and add them to your favourite meals.
Rolled oats are a favourite in our household too. I love making biscuits and recently have been enjoying overnight oats by simply adding chia seeds, apple, cinnamon and milk and letting them absorb overnight in the fridge. Quick and easy on work mornings. x
Jane S
Thanks Zara, your breakfast sounds so healthy and delicious x

Tomatoes are the reason for the season it seems. Everyone has bucket loads of them so I'm loving this months IMKs and taking at peek at what people are making. Very happy he pears are coming through now. I bet those three pears were like nectar from the Gods. You have a whole year to decide what to do with next year's pear glut! cheers
Jane S
Thank you Fiona, it is a great time of the year for growing and harvesting isn't it?
Mel @ Coal Valley View
Hi Jane, have been meaning to pop over and say 'hi' properly for ages but I'm always a bit shy doing so out of the blue. Anyway, it's delicious over at your place and I really love your part of the world 🙂 Mel x

Those tomatoes look fabulous! Interesting to think of you winding down to autumn as spring revs up here in Wales.
