Winter rhythm

?>

As the years roll by winter is slowly becoming my favourite season.  The light is gentle, the days are shorter and it is easy to find an excuse to cook or light a fire, or both.  Bread proves more steadily, butter can be left on the bench, the snakes disappear, I get to revisit my favourite winter woollies and trips to the woodpile provide solitude, exercise and thinking time.

For me, winter is so much easier to manage than our brutal, hot summers.  Right now I am savouring the crisp mornings, the sparkly light and the dark evenings when everyone is usually inside the house earlier than normal.

This week the stormy skies delivered 44mm of welcome rain.

Golden light shining through a spontaneous sculpture in the vegetable garden.

Fresh, churned up water lapping at the banks of our house dam.  A happy site after staring into a big, dry pit for many months.

In contrast to the red and brown shades outside the garden, inside the garden I have a rampant green manure crop.  It is so lush and healthy I am starting to think that I will need plenty of muscle to get it chopped down and dug into the soil before tomato season is upon us.

The winter solstice occurs on Sunday.  I am planning to stoke up the wood oven and
load it up with bread, lamb shanks and perhaps a wintery pudding.  I might even find some candles and certainly
a bottle or two of stout.   The seasons
roll on.

Will you celebrate the solstice or will it pass by quietly?

Stay warm friends x

I love the solstice, the symbolism, the time of year, it reminds me of Christmas in Europe. We celebrate it with our family by spending lots of time outside observing nature, planting the veggie garden, a nice meal, candles and a nice wood fire to warm us.

Being a "heat seeker" and a daylight savings fan…I love the Winter Solstice, because it means every day from here on in gets just a little bit lighter…:) Having said that we are enjoying the mildest Winter I think I've ever known in 15 years of living on the North coast, it's really rather enjoyable!

Ooo I like the idea of celebrating winter solstice. Like you winter is my favourite time, the disappearance of the snakes is a definite bonus! The only ones we seem to see in winter is tree snakes.
Everything seems uncomfortable in summer and seems to take twice as long to accomplish simply because of the heat!
I'm so happy to hear you've had some rain, I hope it is followed by more.

I guess your winter temperatures aren't much different from our summer at the moment (17C here today). We could do with some of your rain though.
All downhill to winter after the solstice so I think we shall throw some bread and mutton into our wood oven and raise a toast to the longest day with elderflower fizz.

Thanks Anne…you are right. Our winter maximum temperatures have been somewhere between 11C and 18C. Bread and mutton in the wood oven, great idea!

Love the winter solstice. It means we're steering back to sunlit days where I am not leaving for, and coming home, in the dark. Hoping to spend my first weekend at home and in the garden for yonks. I too have some hard yakka ahead of me.

It's the longest day here tomorrow – midsummer's eve today – and I plan to spend as long as possible outside! It isn't particularly warm, though. Summer hasn't really set in yet. It's fascinating to read about the winter where you are Jane. Glad you've had rain. I love your veg garden sculpture.

here in Tassie the solstice is a big deal – we are really into the depths of winter and really need to know we are swinging upwards towards lighter days now. there's even a festival and a nude beach swim to mark the occasion! but I just stayed inside with blankets and mugs of tea yesterday – too cold to do much outside for me.
ps that is one serious green manure crop.

Thanks e, I have been reading all about Dark Mofo and the associated activities. This is something I would love to attend although my winter wardrobe might need an overall I think! Stay warm.
