In My Kitchen, August 2015

?>

This month it is the small, thoughtful, handmade and home grown things that are bringing warmth and happiness to my kitchen.

My friend Sarah made this pretty whole orange cake and gave it to us as a gift.  It looked too perfect to cut, almost!

Sarah also gave me this large piece of succulent and presented it to me like a bouquet of flowers.  Home-grown, hardy and long lasting, this is my favourite kind of floral art.

Before Flour and Fire Day I needed to refresh myself on shaping and baking sourdough baguettes and it seems like this technique is rather like riding a bike…I hadn’t forgotten.

A home grown cauliflower and kale bouquet.  I had visions of this being more artistically
arranged but my young hand model was far more interested in catching a green caterpillar
to put in a jar for closer inspection.
Fair enough I suppose.

Bread is funny stuff.
Just recently something came over me and I couldn’t settle until I had
made a batch of sourdough fruit and cinnamon buns, some of which I glazed with
sticky Golden Syrup.  Normally I don’t bake sourdough during the school week because I find it too distracting and
inevitably I end up taking photos which leads to further distractions.  But, on this occasion I had these rolls out
of the oven just before sunrise, while my children were still sleeping.  Inevitably, photos were taken and we may have
been distracted from our school schedule, just for a moment or two.

Happiness is six loaves of white sourdough and a huge batch of
dark chocolate chip biscuits, all cooked in the glorious warmth of the wood
oven.

Are you baking or harvesting or practicing a particular recipe?

Wishing you a lovely weekend.

As usual I am linking with my friend Celia from Fig Jam and Lime Cordial.

Jane you are such a prolific baker. You must have hordes to help you eat it all. BTW everything looks great.

Thank you Glenda. Often we have hordes but a lot of my baking goes straight to freezer for future use.

Jane, as always, your bread looks so beautiful. Six lovely loaves of sourdough and biscuits- Your kids live in paradise. I know what you mean about sourdough being distracting. Your cauli and kale looks good too.

Catching a caterpillar will always be more fun than arranging kale! Beautiful bread as ever and a mountain of delicious looking cookies. Like you, I'm sometimes overcome with an urge to bake something specific or to prepare one thing over and over again (currently a little obsessed with sliced radishes).

Gorgeous Jane. I'm damn impressed with your wood oven baking, those loaves are absolutely perfect.
Baking before your kids get up is just sensible, it rarely happens for me though, I have good intentions and then, I don't know other things wriggle in the way instead. I'm usually frantically shaping or mixing 20 minutes before the school bell rings…yep, and still can't seem to switch that one round at all!

I thought I was the only one who is often mixing and shaping, even when the clock and the schedule might be against me! The funny things we do hey?

It's a good thing my husband doesn't read your blog, because he would have serious bread baking envy – especially since you bake in a wood fired oven – his dream!

Jane, how scrummy that all looks, and I'm sure school didn't suffer because of it! Can you put the succulent in the ground and hopefully it will get roots? They're pretty good that way.

I think the cauli and kale bouquet is splendid! a wonderful sized head – lucky you.
I think fresh baked bread would be a wonderful, worthy distraction, and one your children will surely have very fond memories of when they are adults! once more I am envious of your beautiful life.

Your loaves look amazing! I've just started making baguettes, still working on it. Also having trouble with dough sticking to my proving baskets, even with a healthy dose of flour! Practice makes perfect!
