In My Kitchen, December 2015

?>

Welcome back to my kitchen.  In between finishing off school for the year and preparing for a busy
month of sheep work I have managed quite a lot of cooking.

This focaccia recipe came from Lunch Lady magazine and it is a winner.  As some of you know sourdough is my bread of choice but sometimes it is nice to go back to an easy recipe that contains instant yeast, just for fun.  I topped this loaf with strips of zucchini from the garden, garlic and fresh thyme.

Christmas is coming at us quickly and at this time of the year I always launch into some serious gift biscuit baking with some help from my big dough mixer.

At Christmas time I find it very useful to have an army of mini gingerbread men on hand to give to teachers, hairdressers, mail delivery people and unexpected guests, as well as family and friends.

My children picked this bunch of sticky gum tree flowers for me.  Apparently they climbed a rather tall, rusty old ladder to reach them but they assured me it was all very safe.  I loved the flowers and didn’t ask any more questions.

Curly cucumbers make pretty, temporary bracelets.  Home grown cucumbers make me happy, even if they do grow into strange shapes.

Poppy seed heads remind me of tiny sculptures and I love saving them and throwing their tiny seeds around the garden.  I am trying to think of a creative way of using this little bunch, on our Christmas table perhaps.

I am rather sad to hear that Celia from Fig Jam and Lime Cordial will no longer be hosting this link up of kitchens from all around the world.  If you get a chance, please call into Celia’s blog for a dose of kindness, sharing, friendship, family and creativity.

Happy Friday friends x

I love your curly cucumber. I'm still waiting for my first cucumber harvest this year. Patience isn't my strong point 🙂

I was sad to hear that Celia won't be hosting it any more either, it makes me wished I'd started joining sooner 🙂

Have a good afternoon & weekend Jane

I remember my children assuring me that the things they'd done were safe! Luckily I only discovered when they were much older just how unsafe they'd been. But hey, that's part of growing up and when I think of some of the things we got up to as children …
Love your army of gingerbread men; how industrious! Every summer I collect poppy heads to use at Christmas time but forget all about them and find them hanging in the shed in the spring. A timely reminder!
    Happy Friday Jane.

I love your army of gingerbread men, Jane, and your bread looks absolutely delicious. We've been baking a lot here too and gingerbread is a favourite. Homegrown cucumbers taste so good, don't they?! Sam x

I've been doing a lot of Christmas biscuit baking as well – it makes such a nice gift. I bought these cute little Christmas themed biscuit/cake boxes with clear inserts in the top. Your gingerbread men are just gorgeous.

Your focaccia looks seriously yummy! Great touch with the zucchini strips. I love poppy heads too, and am always amazed at how many seeds each one contains! I have quite a few sitting in a basket on the bookcase, and I may get them out to do something Christmassy. Thanks for the inspiration!

That's a divine bunch of gum blossom – a little scrape or adventure to do a good turn, never hurt anyone. 🙂 Whoa, that really is an army of gingerbread. I rolled out a batch with my three-year-old grand-kidlet this past weekend. Delicious.

I love you army of gingerbread men! You certainly have been busy baking. I've learned not to ask my boys about things they have done either, I really don't want to know what trouble they have been in. The curly cucumber is great and homegrown is the best, odd shapes and all.
