A photographic moment in time

?>

Photographic moments pass by all of the time.  Some are fleeting while some stay around for a little longer.  The afternoon sun might just shine on my back verandah very briefly on a cold, winter day.

The horse might lift her head and prick her ears against a stormy sky for a split second.

I might happen to be at this wide water trough just as the sun is rising.

Once a year, a helicopter flies over the hills and rocks flushing out feral goats to the mustering team on the ground.  The below shot was taken last year and we are about to get started on this job all over again. Apart from providing back up where we can, the kids and I are generally left to follow along at the end grabbing photos and pushing along any slower animals.

I am treating this upcoming muster as a photographic assignment, in my mind.  It is a chance to capture machines and men going up against cunning goats who know these hills inside out.  It only happens once a year and the whole thing moves very quickly.  If all goes to plan I will be hiding in these trees as the wave of goats passes over the hill.

Will I be able to get closer than I did last year?  I certainly hope so.

Will my settings work a little magic on the day?

Will my reflexes, patience and nerves hold up?

This moment will pass, in the meantime I hope to capture some of the action in big, clear shots.  Time will tell.

Happy Sunday, friends.

Beautiful photographs and words Jane! Having a yearly event to look forward to photographing is such fun, and also a really good way of seeing how we have grown in our photography. I always relish any chances I have to rephotograph an event or certain time of year.
I hope you get the shot you are dreaming of!

    Happy Sunday,
    Sarah x

I know you understand Sarah…it didn't prove to be the easiest assignment ever but I made some small improvements on my efforts from the previous year x

I love your moments. The rectangle of light above the basket in the first photo is great – I was trying to work out if it was a very odd table leg until I realised it was a corrugated shadow.

Hope you get your shots as it's a long while to wait to repeat them. Not like photographing a loaf of bread! I recently took an online photographic course, which pushed me out of my comfort zone too.

Indeed Anne…bread is so cooperative when it comes to photos! I am curious about your photography course, what kind of things did you learn? x

It began with basic camera skills (metering, apertures and the like) and then we had to photograph moving things, which I found very testing and portraits, which are another thing I avoid. Too basic for you, but I found it very useful.

these moments that you capture are beautiful, jane – and you capture them so beautifully. I especially love the first two shots, with that soft setting light and peaceful compositions.
good luck on the muster – we all look forward to seeing the results!

Good luck with the muster and the photography Jane!
I see many moments, especially involving magic light as a photographic moment, even more now that I take photos on a regular basis. Isn't it a great way to help appreciate the little things? xx
